Explore Crediton

Crediton is seven miles from the city of Exeter, situated in the heart of the beautiful Devon countryside. Since Saxon times it has been a market town, with the main industry in the area being predominately agricultural.

The church of the Holy Cross is well worth a visit and parts of it date back to the twelfth century. However, due to extensive reconstruction, the majority dates back to the 1400s. There's an abundance of pretty villages that surround the Crediton area.

Crediton is situated seven miles from the boundary of Dartmoor National Park. Dartmoor being between Exeter and Plymouth and offering many opportunities for those that enjoy the outdoors and extreme sports.

Dartmoor, a large plateau of granite rock and covered with heather and grass, is a barren land of raw beauty. The jagged outcrops of rocks, known as tors, offer excellent opportunities for climbers.

An interesting fact is that there are over 4000 letterboxes hidden on the tors (and elsewhere on the moor). This allows walkers to obtain a rubber stamp which proves they have managed the trek in its entirety.

Access to the moor is generally unlimited, except for the Ministry of Defence firing ranges to the North West. They are are good for a sedate walk along one of the many trails and yet also provide excellent terrain for the experienced hiker. You can fish in the rivers with a day permit, or there are reservoirs with good stock available.

For those wanting to pony trek or horse ride there are a variety of stables, both on Dartmoor itself and in the surrounding area. The moor benefits from some superb bridleways and these are also excellent for mountain bikers.

Northwest of Crediton you will find Eggesford Forest, which provides excellent opportunities for those wanting to hike and walk. The Forest is made up of birch and fir trees and you may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of wild deer running free in their natural habitat.

Further on, approximately four miles by road, is the village of Chulmleigh. This is a charming country village which is a convenient place to stay, as the moors of Exmoor and Dartmoor are readily accessible by car. The rugged North Devon coast is also just a short journey away.
