Dartmoor, a large
plateau of granite rock and covered with heather and grass, is a barren land of raw beauty. The jagged outcrops of rocks, known as tors, offer excellent opportunities for climbers.
An interesting fact is that there
are over 4000 letterboxes hidden on the tors (and elsewhere on the moor). This allows walkers to obtain a rubber stamp which proves they have managed the trek in its entirety.
Access to the moor is generally
unlimited, except for the Ministry of Defence firing ranges to the North West. They are are good for a sedate walk along one of the many trails and yet also provide excellent terrain for the
experienced hiker. You can fish in the rivers with a day permit, or there are reservoirs with good stock available.
