Explore Tiverton

Tiverton is located approximately fifteen miles away from the City of Exeter and is situated on the river Exe and Loman. It's a former market town, however its main wealth has been created from the textile industry.

It sits in an agricultural region with red soil and is a patchwork of rolling fields and high hedgerows.

The Grand Western canal which originally opened in 1814 has since been renovated. It is approximately eleven miles of waterway that provides the opportunity for walking along its banks, fishing or taking a trip by barge.

The town has eleven churches, including the Georgian church of St. George which is particularly worth a visit. Tiverton Castle stands on Park Hill and was built in the 1100's.

Tiverton and the surrounding countryside offers many opportunities for those wanting to cycle, mountain bike, walk and hike or horse ride.

The picturesque village of Bickleigh is four miles to the South of Tiverton and is also situated on the river Exe. Places of interest include Bickleigh Castle and a thatched Norman Chapel, which is one of the oldest churches in Devon.

Exmoor National Park is situated within a relatively close car journey from Tiverton. It was established as a National Park in 1954. The terrain is hilly with an abundance of pretty heather mixed with farmland and open moorland. There are wild deer roaming the area and the famous Exmoor pony run free all over the moor. Exmoor covers an area of 267 square miles and is popular area for walkers, hikers, cyclists, mountain bikers and horse riders. With this in mind, there are a wide variety of stables located on the moor.

The coast between Combe Martin (North Devon) and Minehead (Somerset) has some of the highest cliffs in England. The South West Coast Path starts on Exmoor, at Minehead in Somerset. It's approximately 612 miles long and finishes in Poole, Dorset.

Wimbleball Lake, near Dulverton in Somerset, offers excellent facilities for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and trout fishing, either from the shore or by boat.
