Explore Barnstaple

Barnstaple, the largest town in North Devon, is situated approximately seven miles from the mouth of the River Taw. It has become the main shopping centre for North Devon and has grown considerably over the past few years.

Whilst it does not have any particular areas for outdoor pursuits situated in or around the immediate proximity of the town itself, it is an ideal base for visiting other areas within Devon. The North Devon Link Road is just minutes away, and junction 27 of the M5 Motorway an approximate 30 minute drive.

The town sits only a few miles to the West of the sweeping moorland and wooded valleys of Exmoor National Park and here you will find superb walking, hiking and mountain-biking terrain.

The banks of the River Taw are popular for fishing, with flounder, sea salmon and brown salmon among the species which can be caught.

Braunton is a 10 minute drive by car, or why not walk or cycle The Tarka Trail. This scenic pathway follows the journey of the old railway line, with the River Taw to the left and the main road to the right. It makes up part of The National Cycle Network, with the South West section travelling Coast to Coast, from Ilfracombe to Plymouth. With this in mind, the trail can also be joined at Barnstaple Railway Station where it will head in a Westerly direction to Fremington Quay and then on to the town of Bideford. Again, this route is very scenic and gives fantastic views across the mouth of the Taw Estuary.
