Explore Braunton

The village of Braunton, 5 miles North West of Barnstaple, is the largest village in England and is home to a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants.

In recent years it has become particularly popular as a base for surfers wishing to explore the breaks of Croyde, Saunton and Woolacombe. It is also favoured by those who enjoy mountain biking, skate boarding and bmx. You will find a good range of shops specialising in these areas and from this the village has developed a very relaxed atmosphere.

The sand dunes at Braunton Burrows, which are 3120 hectares in size, are the first site in the UK to be made into a biosphere reserve and are one of the largest sand dune areas in the UK. This, of

course, makes the area fantastic for walking and if you keep to the largely unmade road, ideal for a casual mountain bike ride.

The Tarka Trail largely follows the route of the old railway and in its entirety travels for 102 miles between Ilfracombe and Plymouth. It can be travelled on foot and is widely used by walkers from Braunton as a gentle path into Barnstaple whilst taking in the views of The Taw Estuary. However, it is also greatly favoured by cyclists and makes up part of the fantastic Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Network and is route 27 of the National Cycle Network. This is also an ideal route for families and for those commuting to Barnstaple as it is makes for a particularly leisurely ride.

The Taw Estuary is favoured by wind surfers, is popular with bird watchers, and is also well regarded locally for its fishing.
