Explore Dartmouth

The Dart Valley Trail links Totnes with the town of Dartmouth. It has been a port dating back to the Norman times and is still active now, with freight and fishing being the main commercial ventures.

Either side of the estuary are Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle.

There are various beaches within a relatively short distance away. These are Start Bay, Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands.

Salcombe is approximately twelve miles from Dartmouth, situated at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary. Fishing boats operate from Salcombe, but the main boats within the estuary are those of the pleasure variety. The area is popular for sailing and rowing as the waters are

calm and in keeping with the maritime theme there are a variety of boat builders, ships chandlers and repair yards situated here.

Only a mile from Salcombe is South Sands which is a good area for surfing and water skiing. Further up the coast is Thurlestone Sands which is also a very popular area for surfing.
