All Terrain Boarding (also known as Mountain Boarding) is a relatively new extreme sport which has evolved from snowboarding. It's also easy to compare the similarities of skate boarding, although with all terrain boarding you venture far from the smooth concrete and urban setting which is generally favoured by skaters.

Its appeal often lies with those who already hold interest in other extreme sports, such as snowboarding and mountain biking. Indeed,

it's often a snowboarding route which is followed in order to enjoy the sport (the original intent of the was for it to replace snowboarding in warmer climbs or in times of no snow) or a downhill mountain bike trail. These styles of all-terrain boarding are simply known as downhilling, where riders can reach speeds of 50mph. The other area which boarders enjoy is freestyle – performing jumps and tricks over ramps, more in the style of traditional skateboarders.

All Terrain Boarding is among the fastest growing of the extreme sports, with in excess of one million participants worldwide. There are many all terrain board courses around the country and often outdoor activity centres will have an area specifically designed with the sport in mind. As its popularity continues to grow in the UK, with in the region of 6000 people taking part, designated areas should become even more abundant.

The mountain board itself shares a similar visual appearance to a snowboard, with bindings to keep your feet in place which are attached to the board. However, the deck is shorter overall than a snowboard and has four wheels, with their size dependent on type of riding undertaken. Generally a downhiller will use larger wheels than a freestyler.

To be part of the action you'll also need some basic kit in addition to your actual all terrain board. It's recommended you wear body armour (as a downhill mountain biker would), and a helmet as falls are virtually impossible to avoid.
