Hiking Devon

click to do it in Devon

One of the most simple and easiest forms of exercise is walking. From its most basic form, a quick stroll, little or no additional kit is required which makes it either cheap, or completely free! As you become more 'serious' there are, of course, important considerations to make. Walking is an excellent way to keep fit and healthy but it's also important to avoid problems when walking and in particular wear the right footwear and look after your feet.

Depending on where you're walking, there are certain items you should consider taking with you. The weather can change quite rapidly, particularly on the moors, and these barren areas are very exposed to the elements. There is no reason why extreme conditions should necessarily stop your walk; however it's important to be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. In addition to walking shoes or boots wear specific walking socks. It's advisable to layer your clothes (wear several thinner layers rather than one thick one), take a quality and breathable waterproof jacket – not of the type designed purely for fashion but one which has been designed specifically for technical outdoor use. Other items to consider are navigational equipment such as a compass, map or Global Positioning System (GPS), a high quality and well fitted backpack, water and if you plan a long trip the obvious items such as tent, camping equipment and food. It's also good practice to take an emergency first aid kit and to tell someone where you are going, your intended route and your expected time of return.
