Explore Okehampton

Okehampton town has a good range of shops and places to eat and drink. From 16th century inns to modern restaurants with a wide variety of flavours on offer, you're sure to find something to suit.

To benefit from the outdoor pursuits on offer you have to venture just outside of the town itself to nearby Dartmoor. Here you will find 368 square miles of rolling moorland, wooded valleys and rocky tors. It really is a fantastic place for action and adventure, with hiking, pony trekking, mountain biking and caving all readily available.

For walking and mountain biking why not try the Dartmoor Way, a 90 mile circular trail which travels through Okehampton itself, Chagford, Mortonhampstead, Buckfastleigh, Princetown and Tavistock.

You will also find part of The National Cycle Network which will take you from Okehampton to Lydford. This part of the network is known as the Devon Coast to Coast (officially route 27) and travels from Ilfracombe in North Devon to Plymouth in West Devon. The route is not particularly strenuous and is therefore ideal for families or those looking for a casual ride. Mountain bikers looking for an adrenaline fix from an off road blast should look elsewhere.

Walkers may also wish to consider travelling the 36 miles of the West Devon Way which takes you across the edge of Dartmoor between Okehampton to Plymouth. Here you can enjoy some fantastic views of open moorland, rivers and valleys.

If you wish to experience fishing in West Devon, Dartmoor offers still lakes and flowing rivers, rich with a variety of different species, for example salmon, brown and sea trout.

Some prefer to take to the water and situated between Okehampton and Launceston in Cornwall is Roadford Lake, measuring 738 acres in size. It's a truly superb location for windsurfing, sailing and learning kayaking.
