With this in mind the area has, of course, a long and varied maritime history. Plymouth is a Naval town, where a sightseeing tour along the River Tamar will allow you to visit some of the Royal Navy's vessels moored at the docklands after their journey through Plymouth Sound.

Away from the history and narrow streets you will find a modern and cosmopolitan city which provides excellent shopping, a wide variety of restaurants and places to relax and unwind.

moorland, forests, meandering rivers and rock lined valleys to explore. Naturally there are a host of outdoor activities to enjoy, from caving or mountain biking to hiking and horseback riding.

For mountain bikers there is even a 'bike bus' (the Dartmoor freewheeler) which is run by Dartmoor National Park. This service runs every Sunday from April 16th until October 22nd and will take you and your bike to some of the best off road routes in the area for you to blast down! The trail of interest here runs from Plymouth to Okehampton.
