Princetown, at 1400
feet above sea level, is the highest point on Dartmoor and is known to be one of the wettest places in England. It's a small village containing a mixture of gift shops and pubs.
It has a large visitor
centre and is also home to the infamous Dartmoor Prison. This was originally built to house prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars, the land being provided by the then Prince of
Wales. This also explains how Princetown got its name.
Princetown is situated
approximately eight miles from Tavistock, alongside the Thomas Tyrwitt. Here you can trek along the old railway track for a pleasant and easygoing stroll. This scenic route, which
takes you to Kings Tor, lasts for five miles and ends at the old quarries of Foggintor and Swellator.
