Tavistock, with its population of some 11,000 people, is a West Country market town situated on the river Tavy. Over the years the town has evolved from many directions, with tin mining, the wool trade, the abbey and the pannier market all helping in its growth. Nowadays the town benefits from a good range of shops and places to eat. It’s a picturesque town set in the heart of the Devon countryside.
Anglers must obtain a licence to fish the Tavy from the River Authority and permits are available for the other water courses which surround the area.
Situated with Dartmoor National Park within easy reach, the town is a great location to explore and experience the surrounding area. Both casual walkers and experienced hikers will be in their element on Dartmoor and the many tracks and trails also make for some truly superb off road mountain biking terrain.
The rugged untamed land of Dartmoor also provides for some excellent caving and with its many tors and quarries, opportunities for rock climbing.
